A subscriber to a monthly skincare box moves apartments in March and updates her address the way most people update an address - once, in her Shopify account's default address book, the same field she'd update before ordering anything else from the store. Her subscription doesn't read from that field. It holds its own shipping address on the contract, set the day she signed up, and nothing about changing her account's default address touches it. April's box ships to the old apartment. The new tenant doesn't recognize the name, the carrier tries twice, and three weeks later the box lands back at the 3PL marked return to sender. Nothing here is a bug in the address book, and nothing here is a bug in the carrier's handling. A subscription contract tracks two things on a renewal: did the charge succeed, and did an order get created and handed to fulfillment. Both of those happened cleanly in April. What happened to the box after it left the warehouse - delayed, refused, undeliverable, sitting in a return pile at a sort facility - is carrier and fulfillment data, not billing data, and it was never wired back to the one system that decides whether to do the exact same thing again next month.
The mistake isn't letting a subscription keep renewing on schedule by default - that's the entire point of a subscription, and pausing on every fulfillment hiccup would be worse than the problem it's solving. The mistake is assuming that a successful charge and a created order mean the box actually reached anyone, when the one signal that says otherwise - a carrier marking it undeliverable - lands in a completely different system than the one that decides what ships next.

The quieter cost sits on the subscriber's side of the relationship. A subscriber who moved and genuinely forgot to update one more account field didn't cancel, didn't complain, and by the time anyone reaches out, has usually just assumed the box stopped coming and moved on to a different brand - a churned subscriber who never once told anyone she was unhappy, because as far as she knew, nothing about the relationship changed. She just stopped getting boxes she'd have happily kept paying for.
A renewal that charges the card and ships the box did its job by every measure the subscription is built to check. Whether the box ever got where it was going was never one of the questions it was asking.
How to close the gap
- Treat a carrier's return-to-sender or delivery-exception status as an event worth acting on, not just a line in a fulfillment log - route it somewhere a person or a workflow actually sees it, the same day it posts
- Hold the next renewal, or flag it for review, the moment a prior shipment on that same contract comes back undeliverable - shipping a second box to an address that just failed almost never fixes what the first one hit
- Prompt the subscriber to confirm or update the address stored on the subscription contract specifically, not just their account's default address book, since the two aren't the same field and updating one won't fix the other
- Count consecutive return-to-sender events per contract, not just per order, so a pattern on one subscriber's account is visible as a pattern instead of three unrelated fulfillment tickets spread across three separate months
- Reconcile returned inventory against active subscriptions on a real cadence - a warehouse's return pile is often the first place this problem is visible in aggregate, well before it shows up as a subscriber complaint or a churn number
