A pet-supplement brand sells a monthly joint-care chew subscription, fulfilled out of one warehouse from whatever pallet is currently open. At 9:04am on a Monday, the manufacturer calls: lot 4471 tested with a potency issue and has to stop shipping immediately, full stop. The brand's ops lead does the obvious first thing and does it fast - by 9:20am the product is unpublished from the storefront, off every product page, unavailable to any new customer. It feels like the recall is handled. It isn't, because roughly sixty subscribers have renewals scheduled to bill and ship over the next several days from that exact same warehouse, and nothing about unpublishing a product page reaches into a single one of those subscription contracts to tell it to stop.

- None of this fails loudly - a renewal charges, an order confirms, a pick ticket prints, and every step looks exactly like an ordinary Tuesday unless somebody has already told the warehouse, by name, to treat that lot differently
A subscription contract can tell you exactly who's still recurring on a product and when their next renewal fires. It has no way of knowing that the lot sitting on the shelf for renewal 4372 is the one that has to stop moving today.
What a storefront-only recall response actually misses
Pulling a listing stops the most visible risk - a new customer discovering the product and buying it fresh - but it does nothing about the renewals already in motion, and those carry the harder consequences. A subscriber whose card happens to bill on Wednesday gets a box built from whatever the warehouse has on hand, recalled lot included if nobody's told it otherwise, which turns a manufacturer's safety notice into a shipment the brand makes worse by continuing to send it. - Have the warehouse physically hold or quarantine the recalled lot before relying on any system-level pause to stop it from being picked - a paused contract only protects a subscriber if the pallet it would have shipped from can't be reached in the meantime
- Separate the message to subscribers who already received a shipment from the affected window from the message to subscribers whose renewal is still pending - "check the lot number on the box you have" and "your next renewal is on hold" are different notices, and merging them either buries the urgent one or alarms people who were never exposed
- Build the "pause every contract on this product" action as a Shopify Flow workflow ahead of time, sitting behind a manual trigger, rather than improvising it for the first time under recall pressure - the time it takes to wire that up calmly in advance is time you won't have once a supplier calls at 9am
- Reconcile paused contracts against confirmed lot-level fulfillment records before resuming billing on any of them, not just before restarting the storefront listing - a contract paused correctly still needs someone to confirm which lot its next real shipment will draw from
